After some members in Cabool reported frequent " Computer did not answer " errors it was discovered six of the forty eight modems in that system were not responding correctly. We had hoped to reset only the six modems so we would not have to knock off members that were currently connected. At 11:00 AM though the entire Modem Pool had to be reset to resolve the problem. We will continue to monitor the system closely. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At about 10:20 AM all service in Licking was lost. The outage was caused when the T1 service for Licking was changed. The outage lasted about 13 minutes. Service was restored at 12:34 AM. We apologize for any inconvenience. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
CentryTel turned the 962-5777 number back on at around 5:20 PM 12/6/2002. At this time they do not know why the number was turned off. Since 962-5777 and 962-5412 are the same, any members still dialing the 962-5777 number may want to change over to 962-5412 to avoid problems in the future. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Members connecting to the Cabool modem pool with the old 962-5777 phone number started reporting today that they were receiving a " Line is Busy " error or a recording that said "number no longer in service". We have contacted CentryTell but have no ETA on when the number will be restored. Any members using the old 962-5777 number to connect to the Cabool modem pool should change the number to 962-5412. Since the 962-5412 points to the exact same place as 962-5777 , 5777 is not needed and was only left in place so members would not have to re-configure their dial-up networking when the new system was added. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 2:00 PM 12/6/2002 today there was a complete loss of service effecting all three Houston modem pools (967-5756 , 967-9524 and 967-1685). The outage, caused by a faulty port on the gate router, lasted until about 3:30 PM when a replacement router was installed. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Some members dialing into Houston's 967-9524 modem pool between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM may have experienced intermittent loss of connectivity (connected to the Internet but unable to go anywhere) during that time period. At 3:00 PM today a backup modem pool, previously removed from the normal modem pool because it was causing the loss of connectivity problem earlier this month, was put back on-line after being serviced. At 3:30 PM it became apparent the system was still not working correctly and several attempts were made to correct the problem. At 5:30 PM the backup system was again removed from the normal modem pool. At this time ( 5:35 PM 12/3/2002 ) all services are working correctly. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outages. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
![]() The T.R.A.I.N. Office will be closed Thursday 11/28/2002 for Thanksgiving day. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At around 5:30 PM 11/12/2002 the server " lesche " in Columbia Missouri stopped responding. This caused members attempting to connect to Train to receive an " Check username or password " error. Members already on-line could not check email or bring up any web pages hosted on Train. At 11:55 PM email services have been restored. At around 12:27 AM authentication and web services have been restored. At this time we do not know why the server went down but are looking into it. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At this time , 1:00 PM 11/8/2002 , all three Houston modem pools are working correctly. The 24 modems removed from the system yesterday were put back on-line but only briefly after it became apparent they still are not working correctly. We believe the problem is due to a bad port on that system and a replacement has been shipped. We expect to receive the new part Monday morning. All three systems appear to be working great. The Cabool, Licking and Summersville systems continue to work perfectly. Please contact Train Helpdesk if you are having any trouble. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At around 7:30 PM we will be setting 24 modems out of service in the 967-9524 modem pool. Anyone currently connected to one of these 24 modems will be unaffected. This will leave 48 modems active in that system so it will still be operational. This also means that only 48 people will be able to connect instead of the normal 72 on the 967-9524 system so there may be a few "The Line is Busy" errors this evening, but it shouldn't last long. The reason for shutting down 24 of the modems is that the router housing the last 24 modems appears to still be having a problem. The problem were you are connected to Train but can not go anywhere or send / receive any thing still appears to be fixed on all systems except this one. So we will be taking it down until it can be repaired / replaced. The 24 modems should be returned to service before tomorrow evening so hopefully other than a few busy signals this evening they won't be missed. I'm sure everyone is getting tired of hearing me say this but : I really do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. If you are still having any trouble please don't hesitate to contact Train Helpdesk. Often the way we find out about a problem is when members start calling to let us know their having trouble. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
As of 11:35 PM 11/6/2002 we are still looking into several problems with Houston's modem pools. The numbers affected are 967-1685 , 967-9524, and 967-5756. The problem many members have reported where they are connected to Train but unable to go anywhere , check e-mail or access messenger programs appears to be happening less but it was not completely fixed when we installed the new gateway router as we first thought. We are working with both the phone company , the router programmers and Cisco to find the cause of this problem. It seems to affect the 967-1685 system more than any other but some users have reported having the problem on 967-9524 and 967-5756. I apologize to all members this problem has affected and for the time it is taking to track the problem down. Many members dialing into 967-5756 report it is taking several tries to get connected. Some times the connection fails and gives a "check username or password and try again " error and sometimes it fails with a " disconnected from the computer you dialed " error. It is unclear at this time if the same problem talked about above ( connected but can't send or receive ) is also causing the connect errors on 5756. Thank you for your patients and I apologize for the inconvenience. I assure you we are doing everything in our power to solve both these problems. The Summersville, Cabool and Licking modem pools are not affected. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
We will be replacing a faulty gateway router in the Houston system this morning ( 11/6/02 ). Train services will be unavailable during this time. The loss of service will affect all three Houston modem pools. Anyone dialing 967-5756, 967-9524, and 967-1685 will be unable to connect for a brief time. Anyone already connected will be unable to check e-mail or access any other services on the Internet. The outage is not expected to last more than a few minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Several Train members have reported trouble connecting to Houston's 967-5756 modem pool recently. We believe the problem was caused by a faulty modem in the 967-5756 modem pool and have taken that modem out of service until it can be replaced. There may have been some interruption of service and "line is busy" errors, affecting only those dialing into the 967-5756 modem pool, between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM 11/03/02 due to troubleshooting the phone lines and modems in that system. We apologize for any inconvenience. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Tomorrow morning ( 10/30/2002 ) at approximately 7:00 AM Houston's 967-1685 modem pool will be shut down for Maintenance. The outage is expected to last about 20 minutes. Both 967-5756 and 967-9524 will be unaffected. Members who normally connect to 967-1685 will need to use one of the other Houston numbers during the maintenance period. Contact Train Helpdesk if you have any questions. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 3:15 PM 10/23/02 Houston, Licking and Raymondville lost all phone service. Currently , as far as we can tell and according to the phone company Centurytel, all phone lines in Houston, Licking, and Raymondville are dead. No one can call into or out of these areas. This means any members in 967, 674 or 457 that attempt to connect will get a "No Dial Tone" error and anyone outside the affected area , such as Roby in the 458 exchange, will get a " Line is busy " or " Does not answer " error. As of 4:20 PM the 967 prefix is still dead. Also, I still get a fast busy when dialing any Licking " 674 " or Raymvondville " 457 " numbers so it appears those areas are still down. As of 4:45 PM the phone service in Houston, Licking and Raymondville appears to be restored. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 11:35 AM service was restored in Summersville. The outage appears to have been caused by a loss of power to one of the routers in the Summersville modem pool. We will continue to watch the system closely. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 11:26 AM there was a loss of service affecting members dialing into the Summersville modem pool. Members report " The line is busy " and " Check user name or password " errors. At this time we do not know if the problem is with our equipment, upstream or the local telco. Farrell ChristesonT.R.A.I.N.
T.R.A.I.N. Meeting Time: 6:30 PM
One of three modem cards in the Summersville modem pool has failed. We will be replacing the card around 2:00 PM today. There will be a short outage , lasting about 10 minutes, when the system is powered down and the cards are swapped out. Currently the bad modem card is not affecting anyone it just reduces the total number of modems available for members to connect to. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Around 12:30 PM today the Summersville modem was re-booted due to a Modem card not responding. Services were unavailable for approximately 20 minutes. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At approximately 4:05 PM the Summersville modem pool stopped responding. Members attempting to connect to the Summersville system received a Username or Password error. At 4:15 PM the Summersville system was powered down and restarted. As of 4:20 PM the system appears to be operating normally. We will continue to monitor the system closely. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At around 11:40 AM today members dialing into Houston were unable to connect. Service was restored just after noon. At this time we do not know the exact cause of the outage. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
A fiber cut has caused outages in the CenturyTell / Spectra telephone network affecting the entire 573 area code. At this time ( 4:30 PM 9/18/2002 ) no one can dial into our out of Licking and other 573 areas (however people in Licking can call some Licking numbers) . The outage is also preventing members from connecting to the Licking modem pool. Members receive a " Line is Busy " error when connecting to the Licking system and receive busy signals when dialing other numbers. At this time the phone company does not know how long it will take to restore service but they are aware of the problem and are working to repair it. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Monday morning 9/16/2002 between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM we will be moving Train's Houston connection over to ShowMe's Fiber. During this time we expect a brief loss of service lasting about 5 minutes. Licking , Cabool and Summersvillle will be unaffected. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.

At 10:04 AM 9/03/02 the Verizon / CenturyTel circuit in St. Louis was repaired and service was restored. Again, we sincerely apologize for the loss of service affecting Licking over the holiday weekend. Thank you for your patience. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 12:30am Sunday morning (Sept. 1, 2002), an aggregation circuit provisioned by Verizon and Century-Tel in the St. Louis area went down. As of 9:00am this morning (Sept. 3, 2002) the circuit is still down. Verizon services in the St. Louis area remain unavailable. We continue to work with our provider to restore service. We appreciate your patience and apologize for the loss of service over the holiday weekend. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 8:00 AM 8/20/02 all service to the Cabool modem pool was restored. We continue to investigate the problem so it can be fixed and / or prevented from happening again. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 12:13 AM 8/20/02 members connecting to the Cabool modem pool started receiving the error " The computer you are dialing did not answer ". We are not sure at this time what is causing the system to fail. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Around 3:00 PM today an Uninterruptable Power Supply failed causing a complete loss of power to the Houston modem pool. The loss of power caused anyone connected to the 56k systems to lose connection when the systems shut down. Service was unavailable for about 10 minutes while the UPS was removed and the modem pools powered on. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
The outage in Licking this weekend is now expected to be no longer than 10 minutes while power is transfered to/from a temporary power source. ----Start of Message-------------------------- To: T.R.A.I.N. From: MOREnet As noted in our previous message, MOREnet has been working with our St. Louis hub facility personnel in efforts to mitigate the outage scheduled for August 9 through August 11. Through this effort, we were able to make arrangements to have temporary power wired into the facility. The temporary power source will be used to power all MOREnet and vendor equipment thus minimizing the impact of the outage. Customers may experience a brief loss of connectivity as we move equipment to the new temporary power source. We tentatively plan to make this move on Friday, August 9 at 5:30p. The outage should last no longer than 10 minutes. In our conversations with hub personnel, the upgrade to the power grid in the facility is scheduled to be completed on Sunday, August 11. We will move all equipment from the temporary power source to the normal facility power upon completion. Customers can experience a brief loss of connectivity as we perform this activity. We tentatively plan to make this move on Sunday, August 11 at 10:00a during our normal maintenance window. The outage should last no longer than 10 minutes. We appreciate your patience, confidence, and dependence on the MOREnet network as we strive to maintain a robust and reliable networking environment for our customers. _______________________________________________ Hank Niederhelm Associate Director of Operations MOREnet 3212 LeMone Industrial Blvd. Columbia, MO 65201 ---End of message-------------------------------------------------- Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. train@train.missouri.org
Services through the St. Louis area will be down this weekend. This weekend, all Morenet ( Train's Network / Backbone provider ) core network equipment and co-located vendor equipment in the St. Louis area will be turned off for a maintenance outage at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. This outage is expected to begin at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 9, and end the evening of Sunday, August 11. Services and connections through the St. Louis area will be unavailable during this time. In May, the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus experienced power problems that resulted in several brief periods of power loss, impacting the network and T.R.A.I.N. members connecting to the Licking modem pool. A temporary solution was put into place. UMSL is now implementing a permanent solution to repair the problem. UMSL Facilities staff will be performing emergency electrical work this weekend that will require shutting down the campuss main power grid. As a result, all core network equipment and co-located vendor equipment in the St. Louis area will be turned off during the maintenance service. Services and connections through the St. Louis area will be unavailable during this time. This outage is expected to begin at 7:00 p.m., Friday, August 9, and end the evening of Sunday, August 11. T.R.A.I.N. apologizes for this late notice. Due to the significance of this maintenance, an outage is unavoidable. Houston, Summersvile and Cabool route out through Springfield so they will not be effected by the St. Louis outage. Thank you for your patience during this outage. Morenet (our backbone / network provider) assures us they are working with UMSL to find a solution that will not result in a prolonged outage. They are also looking into other solutions. As of 4:00 PM 7/1/2002 members are able to connect to the Summersville modem pool again. We believe a bad controller was causing the erroneous busy signals. We will monitor the system closely. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Over the weekend members connecting to the Summersville modem pool have repeatedly had trouble connecting due to erroneous busy signals. The problem appears to be in the phone company's system . We have contacted Verizon . At this time , 11:30 AM 7/1/2002, Verizon does not know what is causing the busy signals but they are aware of the problem and are working on it. As of 10:43 AM 6/5/03 POP3 Mail services are working again. It appears some large system image files (used for system restores, not pictures) were causing problems that caused the POP3 server to malfunction. The files were removed and the system is working again, we apologize for the outage and any inconvenience it caused. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At 10:30 AM this morning the POP3 services on the server appear to have crashed. Members using IMAP , TELNET or those who have their e-mail forwarded to another address are unaffected. All e-mail services are functioning except POP3. This means your mailbox is still receiving e-mail others may send to you, and e-mail can be sent out but if you are using POP3 to check for new mail that server is currently down ( as of 10:30 AM 6/5/02 ) . We just became aware of the problem and are looking into it. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.

As of 11:00 PM 4/25/02 it appears Houston's 967-9524 modem pool is operating correctly. We will continue to monitor the system. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Problems with one of Houston's 56k modem pools ( 967-9524 ) continued as of 10:30 PM. While we had hoped to resolve the problem without rebooting and knocking everyone off , we are unable to determine if the problem is with the modem pool or with the phone company. At 10:30 PM we will shut down the 967-9524 modem pool briefly. The outage should not last more than 10 or 15 minutes and we hope it will resolve the connection problems. Both the 967-5756 and 967-1685 modem pools are unaffected and members experiencing trouble connecting to 967-9524 are encouraged to use those systems. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the outage and to those members kicked off-line by the reboot. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At about 6:00 PM a problem with one of the Houston 56k modem pools ( 967-9524) was discovered. Currently ( 6:30 PM 4/25/02) , when the system is 1/2 full it stops responding to incoming calls. We are looking into the problem at this time and hope to have the problem resolved soon. Both 967-1685 and 967-5756 are unaffected and are available for those unable to connect to the 9524 modem pool. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
At about 3:20 PM members connecting to the Licking modem pool started receiving the error " check username or password and try again " . It appears a router in St.Louis has failed and this is affecting Licking by preventing it from reaching the authentication server. At this time we do not have an ETA on when the Router in St.Louis is expected to be functional however they are aware of it and are working to resolve the problem. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
On 4/9/02, after several members reported busy signals in Cabool , we discovered one of our Verizon circuits was faulty. After contacting Verizon the circuit was fixed the same day. We have been watching the modem pool for the past week and believe the system is again working at 100%. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
The problems in St. Louis affecting the Licking system have been resolved as of 4/12/2002 at 4:00 PM. If you are still experiencing latency or other issues please contact Train Helpdesk. Farrell Christeson. T.R.A.I.N.
Currently the St. Louis area is experiencing severe latency problems. The slowdown is attributed to Core router performance problems in St. Louis. Since all traffic in Licking goes out through St.Louis the latency is affecting members dialing into the Licking modem pool. The most common effect is being unable to surf the web or check e-mail even though members can connect. We have been told Technical staff are currently working on the problem. We apologize for this inconvenience. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.
Several members recently made us aware of a problem in Cabool causing them to receive a " Line is Busy " error even when only 1/2 the circuits are in use. We have contacted the phone company and are also looking into our end of the connection. We hope to have the issue resolved today ( 4/09/02 ). Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N.

A catastrophic failure Friday resulted in loss of all services. At 8:30 PM Friday night authentication ( log on ) and connectivity ( ability to go places on the internet) had been restored but e-mail and other services could not be repaired. As of 8:30 AM this morning ( 3/18/02 ) E-Mail services are working correctly. A routing problem caused some senders to be unable to send E-mail to train.missouri.org addresses, this has been corrected also. During the outage anyone who was unable to send to a train.missouri.org address received an error telling them the host was unreachable. No e-mail was lost. We apologize for the loss of E-mail service over the weekend. We are taking steps to insure a failure of this type does not occur again. Anyone experiencing any problems after 8:15 AM this morning please contact Train Helpdesk . Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk
Sunday, March 17, the Apache Web server software on the Missouri Express Web server will be upgraded. E-mail bearing the virus arrives with the subject line: "Nice Couple." While antivirus companies rate the risk of being infected as low, the worm does install other well-known back door programs on the infected computer, and so poses a risk to authentication and integrity.
