A new variant of the Badtrans worm, Badtrans.B, has been detected in the wild and is spreading at a very high rate. Once infected, Badtrans B installs a keystroke logging program allowing it to steal any information entered via the keyboard (such as typing in passwords , Credit Card numbers etc.. etc...). Badtrans B spreads as an e-mail attachment and versions of Outlook and Outlook Express can become infected by simply previewing the e-mail message. The attachment DOES NOT have to be executed by the end user. We will be adding 24 modems to Houston's 967-9524 modem pool Monday 11/26/01. There may be intermittent outages during the upgrade period. Any outages that may occur will effect only the 967-9524 system. Both 967-5756 and 967-1685 should be unaffected during the upgrade process. Installing and configuring the new system is expected to take most of the day. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk
At around 10:00 AM today (11/21/01) until approximately 4:00 PM today (11/21/01) all Train services were unavailable due to a router failure in Columbia MO. While many members were able to connect as early as 2:00 PM most were still experiencing problems as late as 4:00 PM . As of 5:25 PM there have been no more problems reported by Train members and it appears the system is stable. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk

We received the following e-mail from MOREnet explaining the loss of service 10/26/01. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Emergency Core equipment outage in the Columbia area At approximately 3:30pm the MOREnet Core Operations Group identified a problem with a local customer router in the Columbia area. While troubleshooting the problem a related routing problem in the MOREnet Core equipment was identified. An emergency reboot of the Columbia Core router was performed at approximately 4:00pm in order to corrected the problem. This reboot resulted in temporary loss of all centrally located MOREnet services (i.e. Video Gateway services, Content servers, some DNS capability). Due to hardware failures during the reboot process full routing and services were not restored until approximately 5:15pm. The MOREnet Core Group will continue to investigate this problem and work with the equipment vendor to attempt to identify the original problem. Upon completion of this investigation a more detailed summary will follow. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk

The slowdown reported yesterday (10/1/01) by many Train members appears to have been caused by a DoS ( Denial of Service) attack on a computer in the Columbia MO area. Apparently a side effect of this attack was that some routers used by Train for DNS services were affected. We have been assured changes have been made to the affected routers to prevent them from being effected by this type of attack in the future. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk
Security research has discovered a third vector to the Nimda worm, which is set to propagate again through e-mail at 1 a.m. ET Friday. Nimda may additionally attempt to spread through e-mail systems starting 10 days after machines were first infected. The worm will mail itself out as readme.exe attachments, with the same payload as its original mail-based infection. http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/01/09/27/010927hnnimbda.xml?0
Also Known As: W32/Nimda@mm, PE_NIMDA.A, I-Worm.Nimda, W32/Nimda-A, Win32.Nimda.A Symantec Security Response has posted a tool to remove infections caused by W32.Nimda.A@mm. You can go here to download the tool. How you get it and how you prevent it - Infected IIS servers (Web pages) will ask visitors to it's website to download an infected file. Internet Explorer 5.0 (and reportedly beta versions of 6.0) may download and install it automatically. Users of these browser versions should not use Internet Explorer until it can be upgraded. Internet Explorer 5.5 should prompt the user before downloading. When prompted, you should choose to cancel the download. Infected e-mail messages will arrive with a random subject line and an attachment named readme.exe. Due to a vulnerability in certain versions of Internet Explorer (see below) and the libraries it shares with Outlook Express, users of Outlook Express can become infected by simply previewing the e-mail message. The message DOES NOT have to be opened or have the attachment executed. Patching affected versions of Internet Explorer will be necessary to prevent infection. Users of other e-mail clients can still become infected by opening the attachment. The CERT® Coordination Center recommends that infected servers be formatted and reinstalled to recover from possible compromise. See the CERT advisory below for more information. Affected Software ================= -Windows NT Server/Workstation -Windows 2000 Server/Workstation -Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) -Windows ME -Windows 95 and 98 Indirectly Affected Software ============================ -Microsoft Office Products (Out of memory errors may be noticed on infected systems) Distribution ============ -Mass e-mail distribution (Installs it's own SMTP engine and does not require the presence of an e-mail client) -Open network shares -Infected websites Patches and Removal =================== Servers running the IIS service, as well as some Internet Explorer installations will need to be patched. To remove the worm, follow the instructions given by your anti-virus vendor. Some steps may need to be completed manually after cleaning the infected files with your anti-virus software. **Internet Explorer** Vulnerable versions: -Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 -Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Not Vulnerable -Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2 We currently have no information on Internet Explorer 6.0 Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS01-020) Incorrect MIME Header Can Cause IE to Execute E-mail Attachment http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/ bulletin/MS01-020.asp Prevention ========== -Install and maintain anti-virus software on all servers and workstations -Ensure that your servers and workstations are patched to the most current level -Disable or password protect open network shares -Disable file downloads in "Control Panel | Internet Options | Security | Internet | Custom Level" to prevent downloading files from infected servers. Over the past two days several members dialing into the the Houston 33.6k modem pool ( 967-5756 ) have received variations of the error " Unable to negotiate a compatible set of Network Protocols ". These errors were caused by a malfunctioning modem and have been corrected. We have also found one of the phone lines in the same modem pool ( 967-5756 ) is dead causing the " Does not Answer " error . We have contacted CentryTel and are confident the line will be repaired , or at least removed from the system until it can be repaired, by 5:00 PM today. We apologize for any inconvenience. After repeated attempts to bring it back on-line it was shut down to prevent it interfering with Summersville's existing modem pool. We will be replacing the new modem pool Monday ( 4/8/01 ) . There may be few intermittent outages ( Summersville only ) during the replacement process. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk The Summersville Upgrade is complete ! The addition of 24 lines was completed 4/4/01 at 5:00pm. This upgrade increases Summersville from 48 to 72 lines. Summersville members should have a much easier time getting on-line during peak times now. Cabool now has 48 lines ! As of 4/6/01 the Cabool modem pool was upgraded from 24 to 48 modems. We will watch the Cabool system closely over the next couple of days to ensure everything is configured correctly. Please contact Train Helpdesk if you experience any trouble. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk The new server and digital circuit for the Summersville upgrade was installed today. Unfortunately, it appears the new server is faulty. The supplier is rushing a new server, it is expected to arrive Monday. I apologize for the downtime and disconnects members in Summersville experienced today as we attempted to get the new server running and for the delay in the upgrade. If we receive the replacement server Monday there may be a brief outage ( a minute or two ) during the install of the new server. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk Two phone lines in Houston's 33.6k (967-5756) are down. There are 63 lines in the 967-5756 hunt-group but anyone unlucky enough to hit one of the two aforementioned lines receives the error " " the computer you dialed into does not answer " . We have contacted CenturyTel and hope to have the lines repaired today. Normally if you hit one of the dead lines just try again. If you continue to experience trouble please try 967-9524 or 967-1685, the Houston 56k modem pools. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk At 4:30pm the Summersville modem pool had to be reset due to connection problems with several modems. I apologize to those who were knocked off-line when the reset occurred but due to the nature of the problem there was no other solution. The new Server for Summersville is in and Verizon has scheduled to install the digital circuit 3/27/01 . Once the digital circuit is installed there will be a brief outage while the system is configured and adjustments are made. This upgrade will increase the number of modems / channels from 48 to 72 and alleviate busy signals in Summersville. Farrell Christeson T.R.A.I.N. Helpdesk 02/26/01 At 4:30pm the Summersville Modem Pool has been reset and looks to be running fine now. We will continue monitoring the system to make sure everything is working. Click the links to add your own page to it or just check out some fellow Texas Countian's Web Sites ! Hello from the TRAIN Helpdesk and Board of Directors! Along with the new year we have a new face at the Helpdesk. Cliff Stark is now the voice on the phone when you call the TRAIN office. Cliff is a native of Houston and replaces Christy Herndon. Stop by and say hello the next time you're in the Houston library. You may notice that Cliff looks familiar. He's the twin brother of Steve, who worked at the Helpdesk in 1998. Cliff is doing a great job and we're all glad to have him. An upgrade of 24 additional modems for Summersville was approved at the January Board of Directors meeting. The equipment has been ordered and we are anxiously waiting for it to arrive. At the February 8th meeting an upgrade to the Cabool modem pool was approved. An order has been made with the phone company to install an additional T-l line for 24 modems. The Board also discussed the weekly problem of the Cabool modem pool crashing on Tuesdays. We are installing a separate line that will allow for remote switching to reset the modems. The Texas County Library also has a new face this year. Brenda Bates, MBA, has been hired as the Library Director. Brenda, a native Missourian, recently moved to Houston with her husband Bill. She had been living in Arizona since 1985 where she owned an accounting and consulting firm. Brenda is a welcome addition to the library staff. TRAIN and the Texas County Library have a close working relationship. Many of our public access stations are located in the Houston and branch libraries of Cabool, Licking and Summersville. The Houston modem pool and TRAIN helpdesk office is located within the Houston library building. TRAIN also has public access stations located in the Cabool and Licking Senior Centers. TRAIN purchases computer related books for the libraries and has arranged for them to stay open until 8:00 p.m. two nights a week so that more people have access to the public stations. Without the library and our partnership with the Cabool, Licking and Summersville schools TRAIN would not exist. In just over 3 years we have grown to approximately 1500 memberships. Our main purpose is to provide community information and any non-commercial entity will be given free webspace to provide this type of service. We have a vacancy on the Board of Directors and are looking for someone to join our group. The Board is the governing body of TRAIN. It consists of 7 members, a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and 3 members at large. Meetings are held monthly at the Houston Library. We agree, disagree and discuss all matters concerning TRAIN. If you would like to be considered for this position or have questions, you may contact the Board of Directors at: theboard@train.missouri.org TRAIN Helpdesk Staff and 2/14/01

Equipment to upgrade the Summersville modem pool from 48 to 72 lines was ordered 1/12/00. Currently Summersville's user to modem ratio is 1:6 , the upgrade will make the ratio 1:4 (this should eliminate long waits due to busy signals). The upgrade will also allow us to add another 24 (96 lines total) in the future without having to wait on equipment orders. We do not have an ETA on the new equipment/lines at this time.
