How to set up an e-mail account in Outlook Express 5 for Windows 95 and Windows 98

A live connection to the Internet is not required to read e-mail, write e-mail or configure Outlook Express . A live connection to the Internet is required only to check for new e-mail or send e-mail.
This how-to was wrote specifically for Outlook Express 5 running in Windows 95 or 98.

Step 1 : Start Outlook Express.
You can start Outlook Express by clicking one time on this icon located on the Start bar. You can start Outlook Express by clicking one time on this icon located on the Start bar.
You can start Outlook Express by double clicking this icon on your desktop. You can start Outlook Express by double clicking this icon on your desktop.
If the Internet Connection Wizard starts up at this point skip to Step 4


Step 2 : Click one time on "TOOLS" then click one time on "ACCOUNTS"
Click one time on "TOOLS" then click one time on "ACCOUNTS"
If step one brings up a "Connect" box or a "Wizard" press cancel or Work off-line and Outlook Express should load.


Step 3 : Click one time on the "Mail" tab, Click one time on the "Add" button then Click one time on "Mail". This menu pops up when you click the "Add" button.
Click the "Mail" tab then click the "Add" button.

The above picture shows Outlook Express 5 with four e-mail accounts already set up. If you are wanting to configure an existing account simply highlight the account and click the "Properties" button.. If you have accounts shown but do not use them you can remove them by highlighting the account and clicking one time on the "Remove" button.


Step 4 : Type your name in the "Display name:" field and click one time on the "Next >" button.

When you receive a e-mail from someone your e-mail program shows the name of the sender. Likewise when you send e-mail to someone their e-mail program shows that person the name you enter here as the sender.


Step 5 : Put a dot in "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use." then type your e-mail address in the "E-mail address:" field and click one time on the "Next >" button.

To put a dot in "I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use" place your mouse pointer over the circle or the words next to the circle and click one time.
Your Train e-mail address, in most cases, is your-username@train.missouri.org or your-username@gotrain.org .


Step 6 : Type "mail.gotrain.org" in the "Incoming mail (POP3,IMAP or HTTP) server:" field then type "smtp.gotrain.org" in the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:" field and click one time on the "Next >" button.
"My incoming mail server is a POP3 server" normally defaults to POP3. Train supports POP3 and IMAP. Though IMAP is faster and less problimatic almost everyone uses POP3 because it is simple and has been around the longest. You can also use WebMail to check your Train email, just go to http://mail.gotrain.org .


Step 7 : Type your user name in the "Account name:" field then type your password in the "Password:" field , check "Remember password" and click one time on the "Next >" button.
If there is a check in "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)" remove it.


Step 8 : Click one time on the "Finish" button.


Step 9 : Click on the "Close" button.
You have finished setting up an e-mail account in Outlook Express 5.
