Before you can browse the Web or send and receive e-mail your computer
must have a live connection to the Internet. Dial-up networking is what
your computer uses to make a live connection to the Internet. This
how-to will walk you through setting up a dial-up networking connection.
This how-to works in both Windows 95 and Windows 98.
Step 1 : Double click on the "My
Computer" icon .
 |
(Note: if double clicking does not work, highlight the icon by
clicking on it one time then press the "ENTER" or "RETURN"
key on your keyboard.) |
Step 2 : Double click on the "Dial-Up
Networking" icon.
 |
These screens were captured in Windows 98, 95 users will see a
slightly different window. |
Step 3 : Double click on the "Make
New Connection" Icon.
 |
On some computers double clicking the "Dial-up Networking"
icon in Step 2 will bring up a Wizard. If this happens click on the
Cancel button and you should be at Step 3. |
Step 4 : Remove "My
Connection" from the name field and type in "Train" and
click the "Next > " button.
 |
You should not make any changes to the "Select a device:"
field or the "Configure" button unless you are confident
you know what you are doing. |
Step 5 : If there is a area
code shown in the "Area code:" field remove it. In the "Telephone
number:" field type in the Train access number for your area and
click the "Next >" button.
 |
Click
here if you are unsure of the phone number you should use.
|
Step 6 : Click the "Finish"
button.
 |
After clicking the "Finish" button you will be back
in the "Dial-Up Networking" window and should see a new
icon called "Train". |
Step 7 : Click the "Train"
icon one time to highlight it.
 |
Only click the "Train" icon one time. If you
double click the icon by mistake simply click on the "Cancel"
button and you will be returned to this screen. |
Step 8 : Click on "Connections"
then Click on "Settings"
 |
If you do not see the "Connections" menu option at
the top of the "Dial-Up Networking" window you may need to
expand the "Dial-Up Networking" window to full screen. |
Step 9 : Put a check in "Redial"
and 99 in "Before giving up retry" then click "OK"
 |
Some users report that selecting "Don't prompt to use
Dial-up Networking" instead of "Prompt to use Dial-Up
Networking" reduces the amount of time it takes to connect.
Do not remove the check from "Prompt for information
before dialing" unless you are an experienced user. |
Step 10 : Click the right
mouse button on the "Train" icon and a menu will pop up. Then
click on "Properties".
 |
"Right" Clicks are only for bringing up menus. "Click"
always refers to the "Left" mouse button unless it
specifically states "Right".
NOTE: If you have re-programmed your mouse buttons this may not
apply. |
Step 11 : Remove the check
from "Use area code and Dialing Properties".
 |
Do not change the device in "Connect using" or use
the "Configure" button unless you are a experienced user. |
Step 12 : Click on the tab "Server
Types". Remove the check from "Log onto network" then
click "OK".
 |
Some Windows 98 systems seem to take a very long time to verify
the user name and password. Removing the check from "Log on to
network" seems to remedy this long delay. If your system also
has checks in "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible"
you can also remove these, "TCP/IP" must be checked
however. |
Step 13 : Grab the "Train"
icon and drag it out onto your desktop ("Drag" the icon by
putting the mouse pointer over it then press and hold the left mouse
button). Then click the " X " button in the top right hand
corner of "Dial-Up Networking" to close Dial-up Networking.
NOTE : Windows 95 may prompt you with a dialog box when you drop the "Train"
icon on your desktop, just click "Yes".
Step 14 : Double click the "Train"
icon (on some systems it may be called "Shortcut to Train") on
your desktop.
 |
If double clicking the "Train" icon does not work,
click on it one time to highlight it and and press the "Enter"
or "Return" key on your keyboard. |
Step 15 : Enter your User name, password and check "Save
password" then click "Connect" to connect to Train.
 |
Your User name and Password will not be saved
until you have successfully connected one time.
|
You have completed setting up a Dail-Up Networking connection.
